宝くじ ビンゴ 5 Earns World's 1st Certification for Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan

TOKYO - Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (宝くじ ビンゴ 5; President: Koichi Muto) today announced that the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP*1), 宝くじ ビンゴ 5 already has in place was certified with Statement of Compliance by the international classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). Effective December 5, the certification verifies the plan including its application for calculating Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI*2) in accordance with SEEMP guidance and EEOI guideline from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

宝くじ ビンゴ 5 led the world in formulating SEEMP ahead of the IMO's adoption of requirements that SEEMP should be provided on board from January 2013. The company has maintained operation schedules while ensuring safe operation based on that, and continually pursuing and implementing comprehensive Eco Sailing, a key element of its midterm management plan GEAR UP! 宝くじ ビンゴ 5, while undertaking continual improvement through an ongoing PDCA(*3) cycle.

The 宝くじ ビンゴ 5-formulated SEEMP is an effective way of identifying problems and confirming the effectiveness of improvements by introducing its unique EEOI calculation method in addition to the one guided by the IMO. It also features comprehensive and organic linkage of application of innovative technologies such as the optimum trim(*4) backed by onboard and onshore demonstration tests, selection of optimum route by using weather information support systems and so on, and the next-generation concept vessels project "Senpaku ISHIN" 宝くじ ビンゴ 5 has been promoting.

Certification by ABS, an independent third party, reflects an objective evaluation of 宝くじ ビンゴ 5's energy-saving ship operation activities toward achievement of its environmental target of a 10% reduction in CO₂ emissions per unit load from FY2009 to FY2015.

SSEEMP stands for Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan. The plan encompasses the most efficient ship operation methods to reduce CO₂ emissions. IMO requires vessels to adopt SEEMP aboard vessels on board by January 2013.

EEOI stands for Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator, an index to verify SEEMP effectiveness in terms of "CO₂ grams in transporting 1-ton cargo for 1 mile, emitted from actual vessel operation."

The PDCA cycle is a management method broadly used for improvement of quality and activities to improve operation, and ensure continual improvements by repeating the process: "Plan," "Do," "Check," and "Action."

Optimum trim means refers to the difference between bow draft and aft draft. Findings regarding vessels' sailing attitude, based on 宝くじ ビンゴ 5's extensive experience, are quantitatively assessed through water tank tests and onboard demonstration tests, and the point that creates the lowest friction in the water is the optimal trim.
